Let me say something that usually makes dashboards uncomfortable.

If your app is 99% crash-free, you’re not winning.

You’re leaking trust, users, and revenue quietly.

Most teams celebrate that number.

Most founders feel relieved when they see it.

Most CTOs move on to the next feature.

And that’s exactly the problem.

Let’s do the math nobody wants to do

If you have 100,000 users, a 99% crash-free rate means:

1,000 people saw your app crash today.

Not this month.

Not last quarter.

Today.

Now ask yourself a more important question:

How many of those users came back?

In 2026, the answer is brutally simple.

They didn’t.

Users don’t retry anymore

There was a time when users tolerated crashes.

They would reopen the app.

Restart their phone.

Blame their internet.

That era is gone.

Today, users compare your app, subconsciously, to the best experiences they use daily.

If your app crashes once during a critical moment, they don’t debug it.

They uninstall it.

Not because your product is bad.

But because their patience is gone.

This is why stability metrics alone are misleading.

Stability is not reliability

Most teams optimize for “stability.”

Stability means:

Crashes are logged

Bugs are fixed eventually

Dashboards look mostly green

Reliability is something else entirely.

Reliability means:

Crashes are predicted, not just reported

Regressions are caught before release

Risk is managed proactively, not reactively

Stability reacts.

Reliability anticipates.

And in modern mobile products, anticipation is everything.

Why “logging crashes” is no longer enough

If your crash strategy is:

“Ship → wait → see crashes → fix”

You’re already late.

By the time a crash appears in your dashboard:

A user has already been frustrated

Trust has already been damaged

Retention has already taken a hit

Logging is table stakes.

Prevention is the real advantage.

This is where the best teams quietly pull ahead.

What high-performing teams do differently

The teams I see scaling successfully don’t just monitor crashes.

They:

Track crash patterns by device, OS, and feature usage

Watch trends, not just totals

Treat crashes as signals, not bugs

They ask better questions:

Which features introduce the most instability?

Which releases increase risk before users complain?

Which devices are quietly bleeding users?

And they don’t answer these questions manually.

They use systems.

How I approach crash prevention today

My baseline setup looks like this:

Sentry for deep crash context, breadcrumbs, and performance data

AI-assisted analysis to spot patterns across releases

Release gating based on risk, not just test coverage

Instead of asking:

“What crashed?”

I ask:

“What’s likely to crash next?”

That mindset shift changes everything.

It turns reliability from a reactive chore into a strategic advantage.

Reliability is a business metric

This is the part many teams miss.

Crashes are not a technical problem.

They are a business cost.

Every crash has a hidden price:

Lost retention

Lower ratings

Higher support load

Slower growth

When you frame reliability as a business metric, priorities change.

Suddenly:

Release quality matters more than release speed

Architecture decisions carry financial weight

Prevention beats hero debugging sessions

Good architecture reduces crashes.

Good systems reduce burn rate.

The uncomfortable truth

Most teams don’t have a “bug problem.”

They have:

An architecture problem

A release discipline problem

A feedback loop problem

Refactoring later is always more expensive than designing for reliability early.

And 99% crash-free is not a success metric.

It’s a warning sign.

Bonus: Zero-Tolerance Reliability Checklist

Use this as a quick self-audit for your mobile app.

Crash Reality Check

Do you know how many users experienced a crash today?

Can you tie crashes to specific features or flows?

Do you track crash trends across releases, not just totals?

Prevention Systems

Are crashes analyzed before users report them?

Do you block releases that introduce higher crash risk?

Are risky devices, OS versions, or edge cases flagged early?

Architecture & Process

Can you add a feature without destabilizing unrelated areas?

Is crash prevention part of planning, not just debugging?

Do engineers have time to reduce risk or only react to it?

Tooling

Are you using a tool like Sentry for deep context?

Do you use AI to summarize, cluster, and prioritize crash data?

Is reliability reviewed regularly, not only after incidents?

If you answered “no” to more than a few of these, that’s not failure.

It’s clarity.

And clarity is where improvement starts.

If you want help turning crash data into a real reliability system, you know where to find me.

Because in modern mobile products, reliability isn’t optional.

It’s the product.

– András
